Lucius Cinna Minor “Equus”
21 • Military Tribune, too young for office
Goal
To emulate his father in all things, and to make his family proud
Physical Description
- Shorter than most, and of stocky build.
- He has a round nose and pursed lips.
- Can never seem to shave properly, always leaving a patch or two behind. When others jest that he should get a new slave to trim him he replies “I don’t trust anyone to not knick up this beautiful face. I do it myself.” To which others laugh.
- He has a thick head of curly auburn hair, a bit too long to fit a soldier, but he presents himself so appropriately otherwise, no one seems to mind.
Personality
- He is a stoic in everything he does. He doesn’t often speak of the philosophers themselves, but he embodies their values by his indifference to circumstance and perceptions, operating his life by rationality only.
- He is a good friend, loyal to those who’ve been placed in his life. Along with this, he is patient and kind.
- He is a dutiful son and brother. He believes the utmost responsibility in his life, even before seeking status or position, is to serve his father and to protect his mother and sister.
Occupation
- He is a military tribune on the staff of Marcus Antonius, where he wins honors fighting against the pirates.
- He doesn’t accompany Lucius to Sicily under Aquilius, so he is Rome for the early portion of the book, and then returns later.
Habits/Mannerisms
- Clicks his tongue often when he thinks.
- His hands always seem to be cold, he claims poor circulation, so he is constantly blowing on them or rubbing them together to warm himself.
Background
- Raised in his father’s villa on the Esquiline, he was given a proper Roman education, but found himself more interested in law than anything else, and he will go on to become an excellent lawyer and jurist.
- He left for the north to fight under Gaius Marius just two years after donning his toga virilis.
Internal Conflicts
- Sertorius’ drinking concerns him. He wants to enjoy time with his companion, but he feels guilty when he indulges with him, because he fears he may be contributing to a larger issue.
External Conflicts
- He is at the start of what appears to be the makings of an incredible career, but is forced by age to remain patient.
