Gaius Norbanus
38 years old • popular party politician, officer in the legion
Role in Story
Friend of Marius, not a revolutionary
Goal
He wants to continue working with Marius towards the good of the Republic and his own betterment, but finds himself exceedingly excluded from the general’s dinner parties.
Physical Description
- His toga/tunic often appears to be the same one he slept in the night before, with a great deal of wrinkles and occasionally bread crumbs or wine stains.
- Never seems to be able to get ride of his 5 o clock shadow.
- Has a round face but an soldier’s build, with hammers for fists.
Personality
- He is much more lax than most of the others, seeming to go along with the flow of things rather than getting over working about the paths Rome is taking. Despite this he IS very loyal to Marius and his comrades.
- He has a brawlers nature, and doesn’t shy away from a fight, with noble politicians, or with ruffians at the Suburan bars.
- He doesn’t shy away from talking badly of others, either behind their back or to their face. He occasionally says very offensive things, but smiles in such a way to say that although he does mean it, he means it in good fun. It can make certain situations very uncomfortable though.
- He is violent by nature and would mind to simply attack the patricians to stop their demands. He knows how ridiculous this would be, but has no reverence for tradition or for the law. He believes they are in the ‘right’ and therefore should use whatever means necessary to secure their place to help the Republic.
- Speaks without formality or restriction, often using the slang of a prole rather than the dialect of a noble.
- As cordial as could be, and not in a phony way. He was genuinely kind to anyone, but would also say very rude things to them without blinking an eye. He simply ALWAYS tells the truth, or at least his truth, with no reference to who it offends.
Occupation
- A tribune in 103, he was the one who led the prosecution of Caepio, eventually continuing it in his absence, succeeding even though L Crassus defended the former Consul.
- Quaestor thereafter in 101 and added to the Senate rolls afterwards.
Habits/Mannerisms
- Cracks his knuckles when he becomes angry. They pop with a chilling loudness.
- Positively identified as a heavy drinker. He offend indulges in great quantities, passes out, vomits, or says violent or repulsing things while drinking.
Background
- He was a new man
- Had led a torture detachment in Africa to discover information about Jugurtha’s whereabouts and movements, and was said to have a specific talent for it.
Internal Conflicts
Feels ostracized by his dear friend Marius because he isn’t one of the radicals he now consorts with.
Notes
- A companion to Marius and Maximus- serving as a subordinate on Marius’ staff in Africa.
- He has a love-hate relationship with Publius Rutilius Rufus. They were both Tribune’s in Africa, and didn’t get along very well.
