There are two statues currently identified as Gaius Marius. It’s common for bust portrayals to vary based on the qualities they were attempting to accentuate, but as you’ll see, these two representations are quite different.
It’s entirely possible that one of them was misidentified, or again that they represent the famous Roman at different points in his life. Regardless, I want to envision this fascinating Roman as closely as possible, so I’ve decided to colorize them both and bring them to life!
Using the incredible software on MyHeritage, I’ve also brought these two versions of Gaius Marius to life. Can’t you just see the Consul giving a speech to his men before battle?
So, how did you picture Gaius Marius? Is either of these two versions closer to what you had in mind than the other? Remember that these are artistic representations, and only my humble attempt to bring you, legionaries, as close as possible to the Romans in my books.
I hope you’ve enjoyed!

How do you think Rome could have maintained the military prowess without the Marian Reform?
